I want to speak to you about the treatments that we, the beekeepers, use for the control of Varroa but before I do I would like to make clear some things that I believe are important:
The ecological treatments are carried out with organic acids which are present in nature.
Are ecological and conventional apiculture equal or the same thing? "No ." There exist important differences.
The ecological treatments for Varroa. Are they harmless for the bees, the beekeepers and the consumers? "No." The incorrect use these can be dangerous for the health of the beehive, and reduce considerably the quality of the honey.
There is a great deal of ignorance with respect to ecological medicines.
On the Internet there are some publications which explain how to use formic acid, oxalic or thyme, in the control of Varroa. As the regulations permit the use of these products as principal ingredients some people go to laboratories and buy them and following the manuals apply them in the beehives. All the treatments either synthetic or ecological have to be authorized by prior prescription and veterinary control. The treatments have to be bought with a prescription and follow the national beekeeping plan (Plan Nacional Apícola). For The beekeepers to fight against Varroa they can do it by means of certain techniques and incorporating products that are on the market for the control of the parasite. They are:
Synthetic Acaricides
The control of Varroa has centred on the use of these acaricides (based on pyrethroids and phosphors) but Varroa has developed resistance to some of these acaricides and you can find remains of residues of these products in the wax which later can pass to the honey, propolis, pollen.....
Ecological Acaricides
They are based on essential oils of medicinal plants and organic acids and they are tools of control and resistances have not been detected by the mite as if it has passed in the synthesis.
I thought it necessary to write these lines to make the basic concepts clear and are useful to the consumer and all those who want start up in this fine office as ecologists.
